Josh Hunt Headlines Erebus Motorsport Expansion Into Aussie Racing Cars

Erebus Motorsport will expand its stable beyond the Australian GT Championship at the Sucrogen Townsville 400, when it will field two FW1 Aussie Racing Cars - one for former Toyota Atlantic Series racer, Josh Hunt.

The second machine will be occupied by Guy Stewart - who makes his national racing debut. Stewart - from the Sutherland Shire - acts as the tyre technician on Erebus Racing’s pair of SLS AMG GT3’s in the Australian GT Championship.

The call up to pilot the Erebus Motorsport FW1 Aussie Racing Car represents a ‘back to the future’ scenario for Hunt. He has raced an Aussie Racing Car previously - on the streets of Surfers Paradise where he set the pole time by a significant margin.

Of late, Hunt has been satisfying his racing needs behind the wheel of a South African-built Spead in the Australian Sports Racer Series and working as a driver trainer with the Mercedes-AMG Driving Academy. Recently, he set the outright lap record on the new layout at Sydney Motorsports Park.

In his junior days, Hunt was considered one of the youngsters most likely to progress from karting into an international motorsport career - at one point being eyed off as a potential Champ Car racer, being part of the Kevin Kalkhoven/Team Australia collaboration.

Stewart is expected to be a hit with Aussie Racing Car fans. A real character, he divides his day jobs between his own business as an air conditioning mechanic, driver training and on Australian GT Championship race weekends, manages Erebus Racing’s tyre bank .

He and Erebus Racing’s Australian GT racer, Peter Hackett are best of mates, having grown up together in the Sutherland Shire.

The cars will be badged with the Erebus ‘E’ emblem - adding another brand to the Series alongside Holden, Ford and Toyota.

It will be both Hunt and Stewart’s debut at the 2.86km Reid Park Townsville Street Circuit. Aussie Racing Cars will have four races supporting the Sucrogen Townsville 400 V8 Supercar event.

The entry of Erebus Motorsport into the category has been greeted with excitement by FW1 Aussie Racing Cars Category Managers, Keltic Motorsport.

“I’m really taken aback by the opportunity to join Erebus Motorsport,” said Hunt. “There are plenty of race drivers out there without rides, so to be chosen by the Directors to be part of the organisation's expansion, in many respects, is a real coup.

“Townsville is a brand new track for me, everyone that heads up to Townsville tells me its a fantastic event and I can’t wait to see that first hand. Living in Port Melbourne these days, a trip to the tropics in the middle of winter will be very welcome!

“I’ve raced an Aussie Racing Car previously at the Gold Coast and put it on pole some years ago. In my opinion, they are one of the most fun categories that I’ve raced and one of the most enjoyable to be a part of.

“The direction that the category is now being taken by Keltic Motorsport is refreshing and I think it has a long future.”

“I am honoured to have the opportunity to race this weekend,” said Stewart. “The Erebus Motorsport team is a fantastic organisation to be part of.

“To have this opportunity to join the Aussie Racing Cars Series with Erebus Motorsport is not one that I take lightly. Whilst I’ll be out there having a lot of fun, at the end of the day, we have to take it seriously. I want to be competitive, but also bring the car back in one piece.

“I’ll be doing everything I can to learn from Josh and the other guys in the paddock. Josh and I have worked together many times on AMG Driver Academy days and know each other well. A number of the guys I work with in driver training are racing in other categories over the weekend – so I’ll have no shortage of advice!

“The Aussie Racers are a fantastic car and the racing is highly competitive - a great formula. It’s exciting to be making my racing debut in the category and especially at the Sucrogen Townsville 400, one of the best events in Australia.”

JASON BARGWANNA - Commercial Director - Keltic Motorsport:
“We’re very excited to be welcoming a professional racing team like Erebus Motorsport into Aussie Racing Cars at such an early stage,” said Jason Bargwanna, Commercial Director, Keltic Motorsport. “We had the plan of changing the image of Aussie Racing Cars and opening it up to more people around the country.

“That Erebus Motorsport has decided to expand to Aussie Racing Cars for the remainder of 2012 is fantastic. To bring a name with them such as Josh Hunt is also a big plus for the team and the category. Josh has been considered as a guy that possibly hasn’t got the breaks he’s deserved over the years and I’m sure he will give the Aussie Racing Car regulars a real hurry up at Townsville!”
