Reba Mcentire's Son, Shelby Blackstock, To Race At Barber Motorsports Park

Shelby Blackstock learned about life on the road from his mother, country music singer Reba McEntire. But instead of going on concert tours, Blackstock’s road of choice is the racetrack. The 22-year-old is competing in the Grand-Am Rolex Series and will be at Barber Motorsports Park March 30 through March 31st for the running of the Porsche 250. His famous mother is expected to be there as well.

"I’ve always wanted to be in the racecar world. I’m like the black sheep in the family," Blackstock said. "My mom hates speed. She hates going fast. So does my dad, my brother, all my sisters. So I was kind of the odd person out of my family. But for some reason that’s always fascinated me."

Blackstock received some training at the Skip Barber School of Racing before making his official debut on August 28, 2010 in the Mustang Challenge Miller Cup. Then in January of 2011, Blackstock drove onto the auto-racing equivalent of the Grand Ole Opry, competing in the Grand-Am 200 at Daytona International Speedway. That is when Reba McEntire truly realized exactly what her son had gotten himself into.

"She was sitting on pit row towards Turn 1, and I came around at 175 mph with five cars around me," Blackstock recalled. "She said she nearly fainted. I told her, ‘Welcome to racing.’ "

Blackstock raced at Barber Motorsports Park last year, finishing 22nd in the GS Class. He said he quickly gained an appreciation for the facility and is looking forward to returning to the track this year.

"It’s definitely one of my favorite tracks," Blackstock said. "With the elevation changes and the technical corners and the fast corners on the back straightaway, it has a little bit of everything. You have to be on point through the entire lap. It’s almost like riding a rollercoaster. It’s extremely fun and very challenging. It always brings great surprises and awesome racing."

Blackstock said auto racing is much more than just a passing fad for him. He is determined to make it his career, to the point that he would like eventually to race in NASCAR, IndyCar and Formula One.

"Anything with wheels, I’d love to drive it," Blackstock said. "I’m going to take any opportunity that comes to my door. I’m not focused on just one series. If I get an opportunity to drive NASCAR, I’m going to take it. But I’ve always been into road racing. The 24 Hours of Le Mans is my dream race of all time."

Blackstock knows that to make such dreams come true he has to gain as much seat time as possible. So for now he is more than content to race for team owner Jack Roush and learn all he can about the sport.

"I’m very honored to be racing for a guy such as Jack Roush," Blackstock said. "They have everything you need. You know you’re always going to have a good car underneath you when you start a race. I couldn’t be in a better place."
