Alex Healy On The Podium At 2011 Honda Toronto Indy

Alex Healy finished third of the Castrol Canadian Touring Car Championship Sunday race at the Honda Toronto Indy, held July 8-10. It was a first podium this season for the Ottawa native, onboard his #5 Super Touring Acura RSX.

Coming into Indy’s weekend, Healy's team informed him that his number one engine could blow up any minute.

The Alex Healy Racing team has had more than its fair share of bad luck so far this season, failing to finish 4 of the 6 races with mechanical issues. "We decided it was time for us to make our own luck," stated Tyler Givogue, Healy's crew chief. The team worked all night Tuesday, trying to stabilize a cylinder sleeving issue.

"To change or not to change the engine", was the question the team faced. They opted not to change it. Their faith in Auto Électrique Campeau, the team's engine builder, would pay off. Alex put up a strong showing in practice on Friday, with 2nd fastest time, and later in qualifying, he managed 5th overall.

"But we still didn't know if our engine could handle the stress of two races in the streets of Toronto", Healy pointed out. Furthermore, the team was penalized two positions for pre-gridding too early. "So even more work to do for our engine to reach the front," added Healy. Again, the motor performed perfectly and Alex was able to move up to 4th in Saturday's race. "I believe that without that penalty I would have been on the podium," said the driver, "but I know the stewards were justified in making that call."

In the Sunday race, Alex managed to get right behind race leader Richard Boake. With a perfect start from 4th, he edged in front of Mathieu Audette and Sasha Anis. "I managed to stay 2nd until the final lap. Then, I saw Mathieu come back and get by me around a lapped car. Seconds later it was the chequered flag," he commented. Nevertheless, a podium, the first of the season, in the streets of Toronto, in front of the big crowd, was a great reward for the team's faith in its engine and in itself.

"This is a great moment for us!" said an ecstatic Healy.

The Alex Healy Racing team will be back in action at Grand Prix Trois-Rivières, August 5-7. Before moving on with their next challenge, they would all like to thank their sponsors: Auto Électrique Campeau, GasTOPS, eBranders, Hummingbird Medi Spa and Tony’s Promise.
