2011 USF2000: Veach Claims Second Consecutive Runnner-Up Finish At Milwaukee Mile

Andretti Autosport driver Zach Veach was never far from the top of the charts at The Milwaukee Mile as he opened his first appearance at the West Allis oval by leading all practice sessions, claiming the pole position and then taking a second consecutive second-place finish in the USF2000 National Championship Series. Veach also moved from third to second in Series’ points standings.

“After leading every practice session and getting the pole we were really confident going into the race,” said Veach. “We made a little mistake going into the start, which let us fall back to second place. We had a good qualifying car but I think we had a little more work to do to get in traffic. We did the best with what we had but I really have to thank my team for everything they did, to Zakosi Data Backup for allowing me to do what I’m doing this year in the USF2000 Series and to our new partner, The Young Marines. It was great to put a good result in the books for all for them and also a big Happy Fathers to my dad.”

Heading into the race weekend, Veach was quick to point to the fact that he felt he was more of an oval racer at heart than the road-racing ace he has become. Veach opened the 2011 season with two pole positions and a race win on the road course at Sebring International Raceway, later making his first oval start of the season at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis where he started and finished second.

The No. 7 Zakosi Data Backup driver rolled onto The Milwaukee Mile Thursday, June 16 for a promoter test day, where he sat unofficially at the top of the speed charts. He then lead all official practice sessions and also took his first pole award on an oval before taking the green flag after his race was postponed due to inclement weather.

After Dario Franchitti claimed victory in the IZOD IndyCar Series race and Andretti Autosport teammate Sage Karam took the checkered in the Star Mazda Championship Series race, the USF2000 National Championship Series was on tap. Veach started from the Pole Position and quickly fell to second place where he would remain until the checkered flag flew.

The 16-year-old Veach wasn't just racing for victory at The Milwaukee Mile either. The student-athlete was also racing to raise awareness and support for the family of six-year-old Xzavier Davis-Bilbo, who was paralyzed last October 2010 when a texting driver struck him while he and his sister crossed the street. As a result of the crash, Xzavier is wheelchair-bound and on a ventilator to breathe. Due to the child’s medical needs his family is unable to afford a wheelchair accessible van that will make transporting Xzavier possible. Currently, the only time the young child is able to leave his home is for routine doctor visits. Veach along with the rest of his Andretti Autosport teammates, carried branding to encourage fans to visit xzavier-survivor.com to assist the family.

Further, Xzavier wasn’t the only new initiative on Veach’s No. 7 green Zakosi Data Backup Mazda. Veach also carried a new partnership with The Young Marines, a youth education and service program for boys and girls, age 8 through completion of high school, on his USF2000 machine.

The USF2000 National Championship Series and Veach return to the racetrack in early August for the Series’ first visit to Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course on August 4 in Lexington, Ohio. Until then, Veach will release his July installment of his exclusive blog for RACER magazine; set to be released on July 1.

Sanctioned by INDYCAR, the USF2000 National Championship, presented by Cooper Racing Tires and powered by Mazda, is one of three series part of both INDYCAR’s “Mazda Road to Indy” ladder system and the MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development driver program.
